Susan Abram’s
silver prints on handmade paper meld the media of photography and papermaking.
She begins her creative efforts with the painstaking process of making individual
sheets of paper using various natural fibers that impart a unique texture
and character to each sheet. For her photographic images, she turns her
eye to the natural world, capturing in her lens the natural patterns and
textures of plants. Paper and image are then united in the darkroom. The
handmade paper is coated with silver emulsion, exposed and developed using
traditional darkroom techniques. The resulting marriage of the visual texture
of the image and the surface texture of the paper is striking and elegant.
Every step in the process yields opportunities for interaction and discovery
resulting in a unique print that embodies the artist’s interest in
the natural cycles of life and the universal forces of generation, growth
and decay. |
